A Thiqah Club for the Disabled
About the Club
A Pioneering Journey in Empowering Disabled Persons
Al Thiqah Club for the Disabled began its journey in 1983 through an initiative led by disabled persons themselves, who formed an advocacy committee within Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services and organized the first sports marathon of its kind. With the support of Her Excellency Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the committee began its work within the city in 1986, paving the way for the establishment of the club. In 1999, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the club’s headquarters under the name “Al Thiqah Club for the Disabled,” reflecting his continued support for empowering disabled persons. The club is the first fully integrated sports club for persons with disabilities in the Middle East, offering diverse sports and cultural programmes. In 2009, a dedicated girls’ section was opened to promote equal opportunities, and the club continues to pursue its mission toward a more inclusive society.
